Gypsy Blanchard was called to the stand today to testify on behalf of her ex-boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn. Nicholas is on trial for the June 2015 murder of Clauddine “Dee Dee” Blanchard, Gypsy’s mother.
Godejohn is facing either a first or second-degree murder conviction in the case, dependent on his attorneys establishing whether or not he deliberated before murdering Dee Dee. He does not deny that he carried out the killing, but alleges that Gypsy manipulated him into murdering her mother. On the stand, Gypsy said that the plan to kill her mother was hers, a desperate act intended to free her from her mother’s abuse. However, Gypsy also claimed on the stand that she floated a secondary plan to Godejohn to get away from Dee Dee: for him to impregnate her. When Nicholas told her his mother wouldn’t allow it, they moved forward with the murder plot.
Gypsy is currently serving a 10-year sentence for her role in her mother’s murder. This case is well trod territory and if you’re reading this, you’re likely already familiar with Gypsy & Dee Dee Blanchard’s story from the HBO documentary ‘Mommy Dead and Dearest’, or the plethora of true crime podcasts that have covered the case, or the many articles on the internet that detail the crime.
